Sunny Southwest Florida is a paradise, not only for us but unfortunately for mosquitoes as well.
Florida has 16 species of mosquito that can act as hosts for Dirofilaria immitis, commonly called the “dog heartworm.” Lee & Collier county have at least 8 of them.
What does this mean for your dogs and cats?
Knowing that they will almost certainly come in contact with mosquitoes that are potential transmitters of heartworm means it is essential to provide them with preventative care.
Heartworm prevention is easily administered by monthly oral pill or an injection that can last 12 months.
Heartworm prevention also provides additional treatment for some other internal parasites like hookworms and roundworms.
If your pet is over 6 months old and not on heartworm prevention, White Sands Animal Clinic will perform a blood test to show that they are negative for heartworm before providing preventative care.
When you bring your pet to White Sands Animal Clinic, our caring and dedicated staff strive to give you and your pets a happy, healthy, and stress-free experience. Healthy pets make happy clients!
