Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors with your pets, but there are some things you need to know to make sure you stay safe in the summer heat.
Make sure your pets have access to plenty of fresh water and a shady place to rest while spending time outdoors.
Watch for signs of overheating and dehydration such as:
More serious symptoms like stupor, bloody vomit and diarrhea as well as seizures may also occur and may require immediate veterinary attention.
When outside temperatures are extreme, be sure to limit your pets time on black asphalt, or avoid it altogether. The asphalt can get hot enough to burn their sensitive paw pads as well as rapidly increase their body temperature. Keep walks short or not at all during the hottest parts of the day.
Never leave your pet alone in a parked car. Not only can the temperature inside a parked car exceed 120 degrees in mere minutes; leaving your pets unattended in a vehicle is illegal in Florida.
Pet-safe sunscreen is a great idea too! Sunburn can affect pets the same way it affects people - burning, peeling skin and skin cancer. Apply to areas with more exposed skin or less fur like the tips of their ears. We live in the sunshine state so stay safe and keep your pets protected!
So what should you do in the event that your pet is exhibiting signs of severe overheating?
Step one is to call your regular veterinarian or us here at White Sands Animal Clinic (239)495-9333. Using fans as well as applying towels soaked in cool water to areas of your pets body lacking fur like inner thighs, belly and feet can help lower their body temperature safely.
Avoid using ice or fully submerging your pet in cold water as rapid changes in body temperature can make the situation worse.
